Seat of the Mining Authorities

Seat of the Mining Authorities - "Oberstbergmeisteramt"
With its picturesque arcades the Renaissance building ranks among Obervellach´s most precious secular buildings.

In the late 15th century a mining authority was put in charge of the mines of the Enns region, Styria, Carinthia and Krain by Emperor Maximilian I. Being a major mining town, Obervellach was to host the first head of the Habsburg mining authority, Lamprecht Zäch (appointed in 1509). It was a highly responsible post, especially in the first half of the 16th century, when mining had its heyday in the Eastern Alps.

From 1564 onward the mining authorities were also responsible for Görz, Triest, Istria and Friuli. Due to the reformatory efforts of Empress Maria Theresia, the mining authorities moved to Klagenfurt in 1778 and their activities were reduced to the Duchy of Carinthia by the mid-18th century.

With its picturesque arcades the Renaissance building ranks among Obervellach´s most precious secular buildings.
